Week 1

I recently left my employer of 30 years despite the fact that I was well paid and had a very flexible work arrangement.  Why?  Because I didn’t feel useful there.  What are my plans?  I don’t know.  Probably not my most logical decision.  My daughter, who is currently looking for ANY paid job, finally asked me if I was crazy when she found out I had to return my company provided cell phone.

During my first full week of unemployment, I’ve been giving some thought to my skills and interests.  I like transforming a disorganized mess into an orderly, efficient operation.  The first challenge I decided to take on was the laundry room.  I started with a fresh coat of paint using a mish mash of left over gallons I had in the cellar.  Surprisingly it came out pretty well!  Encouraged by my success, I decided to replace the floor.  I bought economical (cheap) flooring that was “easy to install”.  Maybe for someone with a little patience and good measuring skills.  Naturally, the work on the floor led to replacing the drain pan under the washing machine. This resulted in several trips to the hardware store for advice.  Let’s hope the hoses don’t let go.  I think I’m done, and the room does look much better.  Of course, I am well aware of all my mistakes in there, but what else is new?

I also forced myself to get out and about – I tend to be a home body, and I am most productive in yoga pants in front of a computer screen.  My destination was the Suburban Boston Home Show.  I loved it.  As a result of going to the show, however, I discovered all kinds of things that I NEED, first and foremost being a heated driveway.  Except for installing the boiler, the salesman assured me it really isn’t that expensive.  Sign me up.   I’m also expecting a number of phone calls from window replacement companies because of all those drawings I entered for free give-aways.

My third accomplishment was of a professional nature.  I created a LinkedIn account and “connected” with 18 people, most of them being from my previous employer or family.  Given the fact that I am an introvert, this was very difficult for me.  You have to understand that I married my husband (an extrovert) so I wouldn’t have to talk to people, including my family and window replacement companies.  According to LinkedIn, my profile strength is “expert”.  I’m very proud of this accomplishment.

What’s in store for this coming week?  Again, I’m not sure.  But everyday, my goal is to attempt to learn something new or do something outside of my comfort zone.  We’ll see where it leads.  So far I’m having fun.
