She Did It

Graduation

She is a high school graduate.

There were times we weren’t quite sure that was going to happen. As a result of her experiences there, I can’t look at that high school with the same eyes. I can’t feel comfortable on school grounds. The bullying she experienced from the get go and into her third year was intense. Painful name calling. Public humiliation. Complete exclusion. Professionals suggested we consider taking her out of the school. So when I heard about happiness being a choice during the graduation speeches, I found it difficult to swallow.

What she did choose was forgiveness. Over and over again. She welcomed back old friends. She made new friends. She sought out and received the help of a few trusted staff members  – to whom I will always be grateful. She kept moving on. And she made it through.

Her senior year was a good one, and she was nostalgic during Senior Week and during the graduation ceremonies. She was reluctant to leave after those ceremonies.

I’m looking forward to college. I am hoping she is as well. I am hoping she has a great college experience. She deserves it.
